Research

The main research objective is the study of host-parasite relationships at large. A special emphasis is given to ectoparasites of cattle, vector borne diseases of large and small animals, dermatophytosis and neosporosis.

The unit has a long tradition of research on ruminant ectoparasites especially psoroptic mange and warble fly. Both diseases having a serious economical impact in Belgium. As far as potentially zoonotic diseases are concerned, some researches are conducted on dermatophytosis and alveolar echinococcosis. More recently, the lab has been implicated with the monitoring of vector populations such as biting midges, hard ticks and other diptera.

In addition to research activities, the unit can offer several services: clinical field trials for safety and efficacy of veterinarian anti parasitic drugs, expression of parasitic genes of prokaryotic and eukaryotic system, parasites identification in clinical samples and evaluation of control strategy for parasitic diseases of domestic animals.
